Drayford Garage |
You will just be able to make out the rare 'BP' Plus post mounted globe in the foreground although it is not clear from this photograph where it was dispensed from. |
Drayford Garage, Devon. A small garage in a local shopping mall. For such a small trading area the use of space was optimised by the neat layout of pumps and equipment. |
By putting the petrol pumps on plinths they could be put well back from the road allowing the petrol to be delivered by overhead swivel arms and hoses. This was often a requirement of local authorities to avoid cluttered and blocked pathways. |

Brooklands Filling Station, Sale, Cheshire |
ROP was 1/- a gallon 2d or so cheaper than National Benzole and Shell. |
This garage had the appearance of being fairly newly built when photographed. Competing with one another were most of the major brands of petrol including, National Benzole, Dominion, Shell, BP, ROP and Redline. The Redline 'Arrowhead' petrol pump globe was first introduced around 1930 so this helps to put a date on this photograph. |
Redline Commercial was on offer and the double sided wide forecourt allowed easy access for larger vehicles to fill up. |
