Shell Petrol Pump Globes
A range of Shell petrol pump globes from the 1920's through to the 1960's. Makers names found on Shell globes are Webbs Crystal Glass, Chance Brothers, and Hailwood and Ackroyd (Hailware). Globes are generally marked on the rim with the makers name and sometimes a registration number. It may also say 'property of Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd' showing this was after 1931 when the companies operated a joint marketing arrangement. See also Shell-Mex globes below for other varieties, and the "History" section for more on the Shell company .

Shellmex Petrol Pump Globes
Shellmex was the commercial brand of Shell. Initially the brand was called Mex as the first 2 globes below illustrate. Mex had been a brand of the Bowring Petroleum Co Ltd who had been taken over by Shell in 1921. The Crown globe is from Ireland where the name 'Mex' was used by McMullens so the Shellmex brand was called 'Crown' instead. By 1930 the Shellmex brand name was prominent in advertisements like the 1930 advert below and was to last another 30 years before being re branded to Shell Economy..
