Prior to the development of the motor car the North British Rubber Co (Clincher Tyres) was located solely at Castle Mills, Edinburgh as a company producing a range of rubber goods. They soon opened various warehouses and depots around the country and forged strong links with the Michelin Tyre Company of France. These period advertisements give a good insight into the company starting from 1862 through to 1891 when they produced a range of cycle tyres and then 1898 when they produced autocar tyres. Of particular note is the business arrangement with the Michelin Tyre Co, and the development of the Bartlett Patent which in 1897 they sold manufacturing rights under this patent to the Dunlop Rubber Company who later pursued the North British in the Courts for their own use of the patent in competition. The company advertising was at times very pictorial and it is interesting to see those adverts from the early part of the 20th century when the company was forging its position within the motor industry.
